Born and raised in Tigard, Oregon, Dr. Johnson studied as an undergraduate at Portland State University where he majored in history and minored in German. He completed an MA degree in history at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and his MA and Ph.D. degrees in German Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Johnson directs the Global Studies Program at UAH. As director, he counsels students about study abroad opportunities and administers short-term study abroad courses and programs. He also advises students completing the Global Studies cognate at UAH. His instructional duties include Global Studies 200, “Global Systems and Cultures,” Global Studies 400, the capstone seminar for Global Studies cognate students, world history, and all levels of German language, literature, and culture.
Dr. Johnson’s research interests center on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century German literature, culture, and history, with particular focus on Berlin. His work explores a number of areas of inquiry, including representations of masculinity, leisure, consumer culture, and immigration.
In his free time, Dr. Johnson enjoys cycling, hiking, reading, watching the soccer games of VfB Stuttgart and the German Bundesliga, rooting for the Portland Trail Blazers, and taking walks with his wife Molly, an assistant professor of history at UAH, and their dog, Remy.
